SPACE — Sensory Processing and Caregiver Education
Understanding Sensory Needs. Supporting Daily Routines.
SPACE is a six-session training program that helps caregivers understand how sensory processing affects their child’s behavior, participation, and regulation. Families learn practical strategies to support smoother routines at home, school, and in the community.
Who SPACE is For
SPACE is designed for caregivers of children who may show:
Difficulty with safety awareness or transitions
Reduced attention or engagement
Peer interaction challenges
Behaviors linked to sensory needs rather than skill deficits
These concerns may not appear on standardized tests but still significantly impact daily life.
Program Structure
With guidance from an occupational therapist, caregivers will:
Complete the Sensory Profile Caregiver Questionnaire to identify sensory needs
Develop a daily, child-specific sensory activity schedule
Learn how to track and understand their child’s responses
Review progress each session and adjust strategies
Sessions typically occur monthly for six visits, unless otherwise recommended.
Areas That SPACE Supports
The program can improve:
Transitions across environments
Dressing and daily self-care
Food tolerance and nutrition
Tactile sensitivity
Attention in busy settings
Ability to stay seated and follow routines
Self-regulation and calm behavior
SPACE gives parents the knowledge and confidence to respond more effectively to their child’s sensory needs.
